Pool Leak Bucket Test

Try this simple pool water loss test

Instructions to determine if the water level drop in you pool is a leak in the pool or just normal evaporation. This is a static water loss test with the pump off for entire test.

Pool Leak Bucket Test
  1. Place a nearly filled  bucket of water on the first or second step of your pool.
  2. With a pencil, mark the water level in the bucket.
  3. Turn off the pool pump and let the water settle completely.
  4. With a pencil, mark the pool water level somewhere on the outside of the bucket.
  5. After 24 hours, pencil mark the new water levels at both locations on the bucket.
  6. Carefully measure the space between each mark and the new water level marks.

 Is the pool leaking?

In theory, your measurements should be the same if there is no leak in the pool. The 24 hour water level change in the bucket and in the pool level is due to evaporation or rain. General rule of thumb is that most pools in the northeastern United States will drop around 1/4″ per day due to normal evaporation so don’t worry if both water levels drop by 1/4″ or so. Heated pools and pools in dry breezy locations may lose much more.

If the pool water drops 1/4″ or less than the bucket, continued monitoring is advised. If your pool water level drops 1/2″ or more than the test bucket water level in a 24 hour period, it’s very likely that your pool may have a leak. Repeating the static water loss test to verify your results is strongly advised. Running a dynamic test with the pump running through its normal 24 hour cycle and then comparing the static test results can be helpful in pinpointing potential plumbing leaks.
